Welcoming Your New Puppy: A Guide for the Whole Family

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting, but it’s also a big change for both your family and your new furry friend! Puppies need time to settle in, and how you introduce them to their new home will shape their behavior as they grow. Here are some tips to ensure a smooth transition for everyone.

1. Keep Things Calm at First

Your puppy is experiencing a lot of “firsts” in a short amount of time—new sights, sounds, and smells! To help them feel safe:
✔ Keep voices soft and movements gentle.
✔ Avoid crowding around or picking them up too much right away.

✔ Give them space to explore at their own pace.

2. Teaching Small Children to Interact Gently

Little kids may be eager to hug, chase, or play rough with the puppy, but it’s important to set boundaries early. Teach children:
✔ To sit down and let the puppy come to them.
✔ To pet gently—no grabbing ears, tails, or paws.

✔ That puppies need breaks and shouldn’t be disturbed while resting.

3. Let the Puppy Keep Their Toys & Food

Puppies are learning to trust their new home, and taking things away can make them feel nervous or protective. Instead:

✔ Let the puppy keep their food and chew toys undisturbed.
✔ If you need to take something, offer a trade with another toy or treat.

✔ Teach kids not to grab toys from the puppy’s mouth.

4. Nap Time is Important

Just like babies, puppies need a lot of sleep—sometimes up to 18 hours a day! Help them rest by:

✔ Creating a cozy, quiet space for naps.
✔ Avoiding loud noises or waking them up suddenly.
✔ Letting them sleep undisturbed, even if they’re really cute!

5. Be Patient & Have Fun!

Your puppy is learning every day. With love, patience, and positive guidance, they’ll grow into a happy and well-adjusted family member. Enjoy this special time together!
