Puppy Essentials: Setting Your New Pup Up for Success
Bringing a new puppy home is exciting, but having the right essentials makes all the difference in their training and comfort. Here are our top must-haves to set up your English Cream Golden Retriever for success from day one.
We start crate training our puppies at 6 weeks old, making potty training much easier as dogs don’t like to go where they sleep. Be sure to order crates with a divider. The sizes below will fit your dog as an adult and the divider will allow the crate to grow with them. Choosing the right size crate makes sure your pup has enough space without causing accidents.
- Females: 36” crate
 - Males: 42” crate

Puppy Must-Haves: Favorite Toys & Grooming Tools
If your puppy is staying for training, you’ll need a clicker and a treat bag. We use the clicker to mark good behaviors, making training clear and effective. There are plenty of treat bag options, but this is one of our go-to options.
Your puppy will need a snug but adjustable collar that’s not too tight but secure enough that it won’t slip off. A good rule of thumb: you should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and your pup’s neck.
- Most puppies go home wearing 8”-10” collars
 - Puppies staying for training (until 12 weeks) typically wear 11”-12” collars

We recommend strong, well-made toys that are sized appropriately for your dog. Cheaper isn’t always better. You want a toy that won’t break apart easily, preventing small pieces from becoming a choking hazard.
